Lisa Desrochers, the author of
Personal Demons hit me with a challenge. Apparently, The Lucky 7 Game is making it's way
around writerly circles. The deal is that if an author is
tagged, we're supposed to:
1. Go to the seventh or seventy-seventh page of our WIP.
2. Count down seven lines.
3. Copy the seven sentences that follow and post them.
4. Tag seven other authors.
I can't actually post from my WIP since I'm not 77 pages in yet. So I'm going to post from
Unraveling, and for anyone who's already read
Unraveling, keep scrolling down to see 7 lines from
the sequel.
So from page 77 on
Unraveling, Janelle is investigating her father's case:
Because
Alex's theory has been on my mind, I type "radiation burns."
Naturally
most of what comes up has to do with cancer patients and treatments for
sunburn, which is hardly what I'm looking for. And I don't really want to
check out any of the pictures, thank you.
When
I try "radiation poisoning," a link for a story about the Chernobyl
disaster pops up. In 1986 a nuclear power plant in Ukraine had a meltdown.
It was considered the worst nuclear power plant accident in history.
Twenty-eight people died that day, more than three hundred thousand people had
to be evacuated to avoid the fallout.
And there it is!
If you've read
Unraveling and/or don't care about possible spoilers, highlight the text below to see 7 lines from
the sequel which I'm editing right now.
Unbreakable begins four months after Janelle loses her best friend and watches the guy she loves walk out of her life. Though the world didn't end, the devastation of resources has drastically changed everyday life. Necessities like food and medicine have to be
rationed and roads are slowly being rebuilt. Only in the last few weeks, Janelle has been focused on a new problem.
People are going missing--disappearing without a trace but leaving their only material possessions behind.
From page 77 (just know all of these words are subject to change in edits!)
The faint singed line of a burn on
concrete—what I now know is the mark of a portal flaring to life and
disappearing quickly—draws my eye, and I squat down to touch the end of it with
the tips of my fingers. It doesn’t feel any different. There’s nothing about
this soft mark to suggest two people were just ripped from this world.
I look a hundred feet south, towards
the bathroom and in my mind, I picture Cecily in pink sweatpants and her “I only
date ninjas” t-shirt
heading towards the bathroom. Her white blond hair is sleep-addled, probably
from tossing and turning, and she has circles under her eyes from not actually
sleeping.
And I'm passing along the challenge to these amazing writers:
1.
Trisha Leigh
2.
CJ Redwine
3.
Lissa Price
4.
Claire Legrand
5.
Sean Ferrell
6.
Abby Schmidt
7.
Leigh Bardugo
